On world mental health day I’d like to shout out my fellow small business owners

Self employment is not a gig for the faint hearted, we wear a LOT of hats and are generally busy people, not just in our business but in our personal life too. Lots of small business owners are also employed in a 9-5 and/or have caring responsibilities, some live with health conditions that inspired their self employment in the first place

If you’re a small business owner then I could happily bet that you’re a busy bee. You’re wearing a lot of hats and creating content for your business for Instagram is one of them!

Thing is, ideas for that next reel or an awesome carousel always come to you at the most inconvenient times don’t they, like when you’re out with the dog or just heading to bed. I’m the same, so here’s what I do to ensure I never forget about those ideas ⬇️

My phone is never usually too far away so whenever an idea for any sort of Instagram content comes to find I pop it in my calendar or notes app straight away.
Then, every Friday afternoon, I grab my trusty notebook and write all of my ideas from my phone in my notebook
.
Doing this as a little Friday afternoon habit ensures I don’t forget the ideas that I’ve put in my phone and gives me a full books worth of content ideas ti turn to every day, ensuring I never run out!

Hi 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’m Amanda and here’s something you may not know about me. As well as being a boy/girl twin mummy, I’m a medical mummy 💜
.
One of our beautiful twins, our son, was diagnosed with epilepsy at just 4 weeks old. A catastrophic form of epilepsy called infantile spasms. Upon diagnosis we had 1 hour to go home and pack our entire, new family up and move into a hospital room for months. Isolated due to covid restrictions, so many of our babies “firsts” were in hospital - first hand and footprints, first Halloween etc etc and of course my business at the time had to come to a halt.
.
Fast forward 4 years, thousands of seizures, many threats to life, every epilepsy med under the sun that didn’t work and a severe neuro surgery where the left side of our tiny then 2 year olds brain was disconnected in a bid to save his life, and things are good 💜
.
We have been seizure free now since the surgery 2 years ago (touch wood) but epilepsy is so much more than “just seizures” and is still very much in our lives. The surgery saved our wee boys life but left him with permanent disabilities. That’s epilepsy for you, there’s always a trade off. In the last 10 days alone we’ve had 5 medical appointments to attend. This is just a normal part of our lives now and something I have to work around, even more of a reason why self employment is a good option for me!
.
I know many of my fellow small business owner friends have responsibilities that demand a lot of their time too whether it’s caring responsibilities or a full time employed job and I see you. I get it. It’s hard. We have no idea how it all gets done but somehow it does. You’re smashing it 💪🏼💜

Carousels!

I asked on a story poll recently what you would like help with and “how to reach your existing followers” came up so let’s talk about carousels
.
Carousels are a great grid format to use to connect with existing followers of your small business. The main reason being because carousels are the only type of content that Instagram will repeatedly show to your followers continuously until they have viewed the entire carousel!
.
So if a follower opens up Instagram and sees the first slide of your carousel but doesn’t scroll through, the next time they open Instagram they will be shown slide 2 and so on until they have viewed all slides in the carousel! Pretty incredible yeah?
.
Carousels are also a great way to NURTURE your relationship with your followers by providing educational content in them, for example.

My head is scrambled this morning, in fact if I’m honest it has been for a few weeks, and I feel like I’m losing my train of thought with my content!

Here’s what to do 👇🏻
💡Use STORIES
💡Let your existing stories expire until there are no more stories to view
💡Start a fresh story asking your audience a question about themselves, can be as simple as “how are you today?” Then pop up an interactive option like a poll or an emoji sticker
💡On your next story slide, show up (yip you on camera, you can do it!) talking about a problem/need your ideal client has
💡In the next slide talk about results you have either gotten personally from your product or service or a client/customer/student have gotten
💡In the next slide, put an image or video showing your product or service in action with a link to book/buy
💡In your final slide, pop up a question box offering anyone to ask any questions about the offering you’ve just discussed
.
Boom. Short and simple! The first slide helps increase your reach on stories with the easy to interact sticker/poll etc. YOU showing up on stories confidently talking about what you offer, how you understand your ideal clients needs, and results you or someone else has got is POWERFUL stuff! Then, providing a direct link to book or buy is the key to wrapping that sale up, DO NOT make it hard for your customer to buy from you, popping a link up whenever you’re discussing your product or service is ALWAYS a good idea 💥
