5 Top Tips for Candle Photography

Before you click past thinking "I don't have a candle business, I don't need this" trust me.

We're coming into Autumn/Winter and candles can have a place in every type of business photography. How? Lets chat.

Candlelight adds a special something to an image doesn't it? That soft, warm, flickering light can really set the tone especially if you're working on a seasonal promotion.

Businesses that might want to incorporate candles into their photography at this time of year are…

Yoga studios

Clothes designers

Kids Halloween/Christmas crafts

Beauty salons

Hairdressers

Cafes/restaurants

Desk workers - VA, podcasters etc BTS shots

Food photography

It can be tricky though to get candle photography right so here are my 5 Top Tips to nail your candle photography using any type of camera, including your phone:

1) Tripod - Any sort of camera shake will create blurring from a flickering flame. A tripod will hold your camera steady and eliminate this giving you a sharper shot

2) Use more candles in the background - It's not always easy, or possible, to get a candlelight effect from just one candle in your image. Surrounding your image set up with other lit candles (they don't have to be in the shot if it doesn't suit) can give more of an overall candlelight effect

3) Lighting - It's totally understandable to think that you'd need a dark space to shoot candlelight but.. it's not always the case. Best results are generally achieved shooting in indirect, natural light. You can always use the tip above of using more candles if you want to ramp that effect up a bit

4) No flash or overhead lights - As it says.. no flash or harsh overhead lights, that's just gonna rain on your candle parade

5) Welcome bokeh - Bokeh is a bit of out-of-focus blur. It can be a very unwelcome visitor depending on the look you're going for but can also be a very beautiful addition to an image so if it happens in a candle shot, embrace it!

Happy snapping!
