Instagram Carousel Ideas for Small Business Owners
Not having much success with your carousels on Instagram as a small business owner lately?
Can I hazard a guess that you're still using polished Canva slides?
Ok, good news, that's an easy fix. Let me give you some Instagram carousel ideas specifically for small business owners.
First up if you're new here Heyyy, I'm Amanda Hughes. I've used Instagram as my main marketing platform for over 11 years now, across both service-based (brand photography, social media mentor and small business community membership) and product-based (wedding and event floristry) businesses of my own.
These days I bring small business owners together in The Small Business Community a space for small business owners to learn, connect and grow:
"Thanks so much for building this incredible community Amanda, it's been an absolute game-changer for me" Jane Hamel Solutions "I LOVE this community" The members are so lovely and supportive and the content, resources, workshops etc that you provide are amazing" Kelly Kemp Your Tech Wingwoman
What's working on Instagram right now?
Right now, in May 2026, we're craving real life on social media more than ever before.
In this batshit crazy world of robots, AI and just all of the BS, we want to see real faces, real voices and real environments on social media, not another branded template (sorry, I know they're super easy to use but park them for now please)

Why Are Polished Canva Carousels Losing Engagement Right Now?
Gone are the days when you'd have to hire an aesthetic space to shoot content (remember folks doing that that?!)
We want to see your messy desk. We want to see your home. We want to see you.
This content creator @that_girl_in_debt does unpolished real-life carousels particularly well, well worth a follow for inspiration.
This need for real life makes sense when you think about what's flooding everyone's feed right now: AI-generated graphics, recycled templates, and the same five fonts on every other small business post.
The accounts that stand out are the ones that look like an actual human made them.
How Do You Make a Good Instagram Carousel Right Now? (Step by Step)
1. Start with a text hook. Your first slide still has to stop the scroll and earn the swipe, this hasn't changed, no matter how candid the photos are. Scroll to the bottom where I share some of my favourite hooks right now.
2. Use casual, candid photos. Skip the branded carousel template. Your messy desk, your actual face, your actual environment these are what your ideal client wants to see right now. Just like this.
3. Tell an easy story across your slides. Think children's board book, not an essay. Few lines per slide, easy to read, building from the hook to the point you're making.
4. End with a clear CTA. Every carousel should close by telling people what to do next save, comment, click the link, whatever fits that specific post.
5. Write an SEO-rich caption. Your caption needs to work just as hard as your slides. More on exactly how to do that below.
What Is Instagram's New Multiple Captions Feature?
Instagram has just rolled out an update that lets you caption each slide of a carousel individually, instead of one single caption for the whole post. You can read more about the latest Instagram feature here.
This carousel update is particularly good for small business owners using Instagram to grow their business because you can now describe your product or service on each individual slide as people swipe, turning a carousel into more of a mini guide than a static photo dump.
Whether you use this feature or stick with one traditional caption, make sure your caption is:
Broken up. Imagine your ideal client reading it on a busy train, if someone bumps into them, can they easily find their place again?
In your own words and tone of voice. Type how you would speak to your ideal client.
To the point. Not too long, this is Instagram, not a blog. Keep it tight.
Naturally keyword-rich. Use the words and phrases your ideal client would actually search for, on Instagram and on Google, because remember, your Instagram posts can now be found in Google search results too!
Real Examples of Candid Carousels Working
Here are some of my most popular carousels recently that follow this exact format I've shared with you above:
7.9K views · 4.2K reach · 89 comments
So, step away from those branded Canva slides, friend, and get snapping on your phone.
Snap your dog walk, your coffee date, that lovely plant you saw recently, and use them all in your carousels.
I promise this is the key to increasing views and engagement on your carousels right now.
And remember, if Instagram and marketing your small business in general feels overwhelming right now, you don't need to do it alone. We're saving you a seat in The Small Business Community where, amongst other things, you'll get a fresh content pack every single week with a hook/prompt for every day. Literally never be stuck again!
My Favourite Instagram Carousel Hooks Right Now
"Forget xx, this is how we're xx now" - Great for converting to a sale "xx advice I've managed without as a xx" - Great for nurturing and/or converting
"Come spend a day with me where the goal was to be xx" - Great for building relationships

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my Instagram carousels not getting engagement?
If your carousels are highly polished, template-based Canva designs, that's often the reason. In 2026, audiences are responding far more to candid, real-life content than to branded graphics, so the fix is usually less polish, more real life.
What makes a good Instagram carousel in 2026?
A strong carousel right now opens with a clear hook, uses casual, candid photos rather than designed slides, tells one simple story across the slides, and closes with a clear call to action. All written in your own natural tone of voice rather than generic marketing language or AI.
What is Instagram's new caption feature for carousels?
Instagram now lets you add a different caption to each individual slide in a carousel, rather than one caption for the whole post. This makes it easier to explain a product or walk someone through a process slide by slide.
Do Instagram posts show up in Google search?
Yes. Public posts from professional Instagram accounts (business or creator) can now appear in Google search results, not just inside the app, which makes well-written, keyword-rich captions worth far more than they used to be.
How long should an Instagram caption be?
Long enough to say what you need to say in your own voice, broken into short, easy-to-read chunks with line breaks, but short enough that it doesn't read like an essay. Think "quick to scan on a busy train," not "blog post"
