“Reminder for the pen to paper people, I see you!”

That was the caption on one of my reels recently - and wow. The way my DMs agreed?

I felt like we were having a collective exhale together.

Because while everyone’s obsessing over Notion templates and digital planning hacks, some of us are just out here living our best lives with a notebook and a nice pen.

And guess what? That doesn’t make us old-fashioned or inefficient.

It makes us intentional.

Notion is cute, but my notebook is cuter 😌

I’ve tried the digital route.

Trello, ClickUp, Asana, Notion… I gave them all a fair shot.

But after a few days (okay, sometimes hours) I’d quietly drift back to what actually works for me:

  • Pen

  • Paper

  • Pages I can flip through and feel

There’s just something magical about it. The little dopamine hit of ticking something off. The calm focus that kicks in when I sit down to plan content with no tabs open. The smell of a fresh notebook (yes, that’s a thing and I will die on this hill 😂)

The science backs us up, by the way 🧠✍️

Let’s geek out for a second, because I love when research confirms what we already know deep down.

Handwriting isn’t just a sweet little habit - it’s a brain-boosting power move.

Studies show that writing by hand activates more areas of the brain than typing. In particular, it lights up regions responsible for memory, learning, comprehension, and creativity.

One study from the University of Tokyo found that handwriting actually creates stronger and more meaningful neural connections, meaning you’re more likely to remember what you write -and act on it.

Another gem? A 2014 study published in Psychological Science found that students who took notes by hand understood and retained information better than those who typed them. Why? Because handwriting forces your brain to slow down and process - rather than just transcribe.

And for my fellow overthinkers and content perfectionists, get this:

Writing by hand has also been linked to improved focus, creativity, and stress reduction. So that moment when you finally sit down with your planner and a cuppa and everything feels calmer? Yeah, that’s real.

If digital tools stress you out, you’re not alone

You’re not doing it wrong if digital tools make your brain feel like scrambled eggs.

Notion is brilliant - for some people

Trello boards are fabulous - for the colour-coded crowd

But if your brain works better with physical space, visual cues, and tactile action…

then pen-to-paper planning isn’t a fallback - it’s a strategy.

You’re not behind.

You’re aligned.

I made the Social Media Planner by Amanda Hughes for people like us

I was so tired of trying to squish my content planning into tools that didn’t fit how I naturally think.

That’s why I created the Social Media Planner -

for small business owners who want structure and strategy,

but also crave that ✨stationery joy

It works for all your social media platforms - Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, even YouTube. Whether you’re batching Reels, writing captions, or mapping out your nurture content, it gives you space to plan everything in one place, without jumping between screens.

And of course - there’s a free printable version you can try out first.

Try it your way (because that is the right way)

If you love lighting a candle, setting up your desk, and mapping out your content plan on actual paper - this planner was made for you.

Give it a go. Plan your next week (or month!) of content across Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn or wherever your people hang out, without needing a password or an app.

Just you, your thoughts, and a paper system that gets it.

And when you try it, tag me on Instagram! 📸

I love seeing your planner setups - highlighters, stickers, scribbles and all.

We pen-to-paper people need to stick together 💛

You’ve got this - and your content plan is about to feel so much better.
