We all know, as a small business owner, writing your own website copy can feel like pulling teeth.
It’s one of those tasks that small business owners often put off (or avoid entirely) because it feels awkward, overwhelming, or just plain confusing.
What do you write?
How do you write it?
And how do you make sure it actually connects with the people you want to serve?
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. But here’s the good news: your website copy doesn’t need to be perfect to be powerful.
In a recent episode of The Growth Addicts Podcast I chatted with website copywrite and blog writer Claire Cunningham about simple, instant ways to improve your website copy- no copywriter required.
Whether you’re DIY-ing your website or refreshing your existing pages, these tips will help you turn confusing copy into clear, compelling words that convert.
What Is Website Copy (and Why Does It Matter)?
Website copy is simply the words on your website. Think homepage, about page, services page, sales pages- all the bits that tell people who you are, what you do, and how you can help.
Your website isn’t just a digital business card.
It’s one of your most powerful marketing tools. If your copy isn’t doing the job, you could be missing out on sales, clients, and opportunities.
Let’s dive into some easy ways to instantly make your copy better (and more effective).
1. Write Like You Speak
You don’t need to sound fancy. You don’t need to channel Shakespeare. You just need to sound like you.
One of Claire’s top tips?
Stop overthinking it and write how you talk.
That means:
Using contractions (you’re instead of you are)
Keeping sentences short and punchy
Ditching formal phrases like "utilise" or "therefore"
For example, instead of:
"Our mission is to provide exceptional wellness services tailored to your individual needs."
Try:
"We help you feel better in your body- with personalised treatments that actually work."
See the difference? One feels corporate. The other feels human.
2. Use Headings to Break Up Long Text
Nothing makes people click away faster than a wall of text.
Headings help guide your reader through the page and make it scannable. Plus, they’re great for SEO.
Make your headings useful, not vague.
Instead of "About" try "My Journey to Becoming a Skincare Specialist" or "Why I Started This Business" Headings should help people find the info they care about fast.
3. Speak to Your Ideal Client’s Problems and Goals
Your website isn’t about you. It’s about the person you want to help.
So instead of just listing your credentials or telling your story, connect it back to what your ideal client is struggling with and what they want.
Ask yourself:
What are they Googling at 2am?
What’s stressing them out?
What outcome are they dreaming about?
Then reflect that in your copy. For example:
"If you’re sick of spending hours on Instagram with nothing to show for it, you’re in the right place. I help small business owners create strategic content that actually gets sales."
That’s going to land much better than "Welcome to my website, I offer social media mentoring."
4. Cut the Fluff and Jargon
We often add extra words to try and sound more professional, but it usually just creates confusion.
Claire’s advice? Cut the fluff.
Be direct. Say what you mean. And ditch the jargon your clients won’t understand.
Instead of:
"Our bespoke holistic solutions are designed to optimise client wellbeing and elevate daily living experiences."
Try:
"We help you feel calmer, sleep better, and enjoy your day more."
Clarity always wins.
Final Thought: Connection Over Cleverness
You don’t need perfect words. You need clear ones.
Your goal isn’t to impress - it’s to connect.
When you write like a real human, speak directly to your dream client, and keep things simple, your website copy will start doing what it’s meant to do: convert curious visitors into paying customers.
