How Much Does It Cost to Join a Business Community?

When you're running a small business, every pound matters. So it makes total sense that one of the first questions people ask me is: 'How much does it actually cost to join a business community?'


And I love that question. Because it means you're thinking about investing in yourself and your business which is always a good sign.


So let's talk about how much it costs.

What's the Range?

Business membership communities come in all shapes, sizes and price points. Here's a rough breakdown of what you might find out there:

 

•      Free communities — Facebook groups, local meetups, online forums. Great for dipping your toes in, but often noisy, slow to respond, unmoderated, and lacking real support.

•      Low cost (under £50/month) — Structured, supportive communities like The Small Business Community. You get real value without the scary price tag.

•      Mid-range (£50–£150/month) — Often include coaching elements, courses, or more intensive accountability.

•      Premium (£150+/month) — Masterminds, high-level peer groups, or communities with 1:1 mentoring built in.

 

There's no 'right' answer, it depends on where you are in your business journey and what kind of support you're looking for. Is a Free Business Community Worth It?


Free can be brilliant or it can be a total time sink.


The problem with free business communities is that without structure, they can quickly become overwhelming. You might spend hours scrolling through posts, getting advice from people who have never run a business, or just feeling more confused than when you started.


That's not to say they're useless.

Free communities are a great way to:

•      Get a feel for community life before committing

•      Find your people in a specific niche or location

•      Access general business chat and moral support

 

But if you want structure, workshops, real accountability and someone who actually knows what they're talking about (hi! 👋) it's worth considering a paid option.

What Do You Actually Get for Your Money?


This is the big one. Because a business community isn't just a group chat or at least, it shouldn't be.

When I built The Small Business Community, I wanted it to feel like having a brilliant, knowledgeable group of small business friends in your corner. Colleagues you could turn to for the wins, the wobbles and everything in between.


Here's what a good paid community (like ours!) should include:

•      A safe, supportive space to ask questions without judgement

•      Regular workshops and training on the stuff that actually matters (social media, mindset, marketing.. you name it)

•      Direct access to someone with real expertise (that's me, 12 years experience and counting)

•      A community of people who GET IT because they're living small business life too

•      Accountability to keep you moving forward

 

Also.. one good idea from a workshop, or one problem solved by the community, could easily save or make you far more than the monthly cost.

How Do I Know If I'm Getting Good Value?


Here are a few things to look for when weighing up whether a business community is worth the cost:

 

•      Is there a real, present, human being running it or is it just a platform?

•      Are there regular events, workshops or live sessions included?

•      Do the members actually engage and support each other?

•      Is there someone with genuine expertise you can lean on?

•      Does it feel welcoming or intimidating and cliquey?

 

If you can tick most of those boxes, you're onto a winner
